 2018 Preview

Central completed the 2017 season with a 8-4 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 5A region four, the Volunteers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Central reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Demopolis by a score of 17-6.

Central is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only six seasons. They have managed a record of 51-21 over the past six years.

The Volunteers will be under the direction of new head football coach Danny Horn as they enter the 2018 season.

Coach Horn's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-nine season stands at 287-83 (77.6%). His 287 wins rank 4th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Horn's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-six times and won fourteen region championships. He has a 61-20 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. Coach Horn won six state championships prior to arriving at Central, the last coming in 2005 at .

The Central Volunteers will play in Class 5A region five during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Volunteers remain in 5A but move from region four over to region five.

Central enters the 2018 season with a string of 6 consecutive wins on their home field at Volunteer Stadium.

The Volunteers should be in contention for a playoff spot in region five this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game.

The Volunteers open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Benjamin Russell on Friday, August 31 at Volunteer Stadium. Last year the Benjamin Russell Wildcats finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in second place in Class 6A region three. The Wildcats lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Saraland by a score of 35-7.

Central and Benjamin Russell have met a total of 10 times on the football field. The Volunteers have a 5-5-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2017 with Benjamin Russell winning by a score of 28-14.
